Stencil Tip from a Reader

Monday, April 20th, 2009

This is a comment I AquaMan recived and wanted to share with all you Brushed readers. This next section is copied from his exact words.

Hey Aquaman,
Ive found a few tricks for stencils.
First for shirts instead of using frisket to get hard lines on the edges, use clear contact paper. It can be picked up at Target or Kmart.
Second Public transit buses use a clear sticker type of cover to prevent graffitti on the windows of the buses . This happens to be perfect for making stencils.”

BodyAir Airbrushing-Safe for Skin

Monday, January 12th, 2009

BodyAir airbrush colors are designed fro temporary body tattoos, skin coloring, and extended life waterproof make-up. The BodyAir line is formulated using safe water based chemistry. The colors are vivid and the paints adhere to the skin well. THe colors can be easily scrubbed away with the use of soap and a face cloth. If you desire to extend the longevity of the colors, apply a protective clear coating over the body art. We suggest our BodyAir Clear Coat 100. There are other types of clear coating also available; we recommend you try several and evaluate which works best for you.

Spraying Techniques: The colors should be dry sprayed to achieve the best performance, especially in stenciling. The process is simple, spray with loats of air and little color. This partially dries the colors, allowing the paint to become semi-dry as it contacts the skin, producing sharper stencil images and eliminating bleeding. BodyAir can be thinned if necessary with distilled water.

Obtaining Bright Colors: In the BodyAir color pallet we offer transparent colors that produce beautiful blends. To obtain brightest colors apply BodyAir white as a base especially on darker skin tones. BodyAir Glow-in-the-Dark colors should also be based with white to produce maximum “glow in the dark” effect.

Colors and Special Effects: BodyAir is available in a wide array of colors and exciting special effects. Colors vary from brilliant fire reds to subued camouflage greens. The special effect colors include iridescent and Glow-in-the-Dark. Iridescent shades radiate intense colors and visually change as illumination varies. Glow-in-the-Dark colors are charged by light and produce an erie glow in toatl darkness. Glow-in-the-Dark colors are available in standard green and the new ultra long glow blue. Check out the AquaFlow website to order any of these special inks.

Health Note: BodyAir colors are manufactured using safe material guidelines; however , there are a few individuals with sensitive skin who may be irritated by skin painting.

just so you’re warned. Peace out. +AquaMan+

Aqua Flow Airbrush colors are “Colors Dreams Are Made Of,”
vibrant colors made of premium materials that have set the standards for airbrush colors for two decades.

Our colors use exclusive ultra atomizing formulations that produce unmatched smooth photographic blends. Aqua Flow colors contain premium acrylic binders that provide durability and stability for your art, this will allow your work to endure the test of time and remain for future generations to enjoy. We select materials that are environmentally sound and are as safe as possible, making your work earth friendly.

T-100 Top Binder
is primarily used over finished textile art to provide additional protection. This coating requires heat setting for washable art.

E-100 Binder Concentrate
is a concentrated form of the acrylic binder used in the T-100. Use this for building back the binder concentration of colors that have been diluted with excessive amounts of water.

LVC-100 low Vinyl Clear
is a product that can be used as a color extender to reduce the color concentration. It has a body similar to the colors and maintains the performance and integrity of the color.

R-100 Retarder
this liquid when added to the colors will slow the drying of the color resulting in less tip drying. Use as conditions warrant. Avoid excessive use as this product may cause fisheye on car tags and non-absorbent surfaces.

T-900 Transparent White
can be used for creating colors in light shades that are stable and consistent in color value.

TF-100 Tip Flow
is a liquid added to the colors to lower the surface tension and reduce tip drying in harsh environments.

Fragrances (assorted)
these are liquid fragrances that when added to the colors provides a temporary scent that dissipates after the first washing.

Transparent “T” vs. Opaque “O”
Transparent colors are chosen over opaque colors in most applications. The transparency of our bright colors produce beautiful blends of color when layered over one another. Opaque colors will cover over dark backgrounds, when sprayed over one another they show little blending. Opaque colors as a rule do not have the depth and saturation produced by transparent colors.

AquaFlow
Aqua Flow uses an exclusive ultra atomizing formulation that allows their paint to produce unmatched smooth photographic blends. Aqua Flow colors contain premium acrylic binders that provide durability and stability for your art, allowing your work to endure the test of time and remain for future generations to enjoy. Aqua Flow paints are manufactured from the materials that are environmentally sound and are as safe as possible, making your work earth friendly.

Aqua Flow paint was designed especially for airbrushing. The paints are water based. They dry quickly and adhere to a wide variety of surfaces. Aqua Flow features a broad color selection with bright colors, strong pigment concentration, easy clean up and good durability. Aqua Flow has been the professionals choice for over 20 years.

Leather - First prep the leather by cleaning with acetone and a clean cloth. This takes off dirt, oil and waxes so that the paint will adhere. Sketch the design out with white or lay down a light base coat of white and proceed as normal. It is sometimes necessary to use several light coats rather than one heavy coat to bring color out. Use a compact hair dryer to speed drying and to cure the paint. When the artwork is dry, rub with mink oil or good quality leather treatment.

Auto Tags - Scuff the tag lightly with 600 grit sandpaper or a fine scotch bright pad. Next, lay down a light coat of white, light blue or gray, depending on the design you are painting. This helps the colors that follow to cover more evenly and dry faster. A compact hair dryer to dry as you go along greatly increases productivity. Now, dry the artwork and top coat with a quality “high gloss” clear acrylic enamel. When painting tags, use retarder very sparingly in your colors. Too much will result in fish eyes (round spots where the color does not cover.)

Denim - Light denim will work much the same way as a T-shirt. Dark denim should be prewashed to remove sizing material. Sizing will prevent colors from adhering to the material. Sketch out your design with white. Some artist prefer to lay down a base coat of white and then work the design like a T-shirt. Because denim is so thick, multiple coats of color are necessary. A compact hair dryer speeds up the process of painting multiple coats. Now for extra wash fastness, top coat your artwork with top binder and heat set.

Top Binder - May be added to paint to extend color and retain good wash fastness. For added wash fastness with excellent durability, spray top binder over finished artwork and heat set. (Before applying, airbrush must be cleaned of any previous color.)

Retarder - Extends drying time of Aqua Flow colors and reduces tip drying. Only a small amount of retarder is needed, usually just a few drops per one ounce of color.
